In Portugal, there are many regional month markets. It is traditionally a major feature in this sparsely populated region. Without supermarkets and with specialty shops only in the larger cities, the markets provided once a month for everything that was not locally produced . Hence the variety of products. From live chicken to long-life foods such as bacalhau and whole cured hams. But also hardware, agricultural implements and boiling equipment, pots and pans and clothing.
There are always opportunities for a good lunch because people come from far and make it a day trip.

Several towns have preserved their authentic market hall, which is open daily (except Sundays), usually only in the morning. Local fresh goods – meat, fish, vegetables, are sold here on a small scale. The picture below is the recently restored market hall-(Mercado Municipal)- in Grândola.
